Frequently asked questions.
Where does Eucalyptus polybractea grow?
Eucalyptus polybractea is an Australian native tree that grows up to 6 metres (20 feet). Eucalyptus polybractea trees originate from the south-eastern part of the country but also grow well in Western Australia. Eucalyptus polybractea enjoys cold to temperate, Mediterranean to subtropical climates, they are robust trees that can sustain various weather conditions.
What can eucalyptus oil be used for?
Aromatherapy
The European Medicines Agency Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products concluded, that eucalyptus oil can be used to treat symptoms such as coughing associated with the common cold, and relieve symptoms of localised muscle pain.
Insect repellent and biopesticide
High cineole eucalyptus oil, such as our polybractea oil, is used as an insect repellent and biopesticide. In the U.S., eucalyptus oil was first registered in 1948 as an insecticide and miticide.
Flavouring and fragrance
Eucalyptus oil is used in flavouring. Cineole-based eucalyptus oil, like the one extracted from our polybractea trees, is used as a flavouring at low levels in various products, including baked goods, confectionery, meat products and beverages. Eucalyptus oil has antimicrobial activity against a broad range of human foodborne pathogens and food spoilage microorganisms. Eucalyptus oil is also used as a fragrance component to impart a fresh and clean aroma in soaps, detergents, lotions, and perfumes. It is well known for its pungent and fresh scent. Due to its cleansing properties, eucalyptus oil is used in a lot of oral care products, like mouth rinses or toothpaste to freshen breath.
Cleaning
Eucalyptus oil has natural, anti-microbial and antiseptic properties, and is used in various household cleaning applications. It is also commonly used in commercial laundry and surface cleaning products.
What makes Australian eucalyptus oil different?
There are many varieties of Eucalyptus in the world and Australia is home to almost all 700 known species. Eucalyptus has been and still is an icon of the Australian flora, its crops benefiting from native conditions, excellent soil, mild climate and sufficient rainfall. Australia is one of the most pest-free and disease-free agricultural production areas, and as a result, Australian made eucalyptus oil has a relatively lower pesticides residue.
What are the key components of eucalyptus oil?
Eucalyptus oil is a complex mixture of a variety of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, aromatic phenols, oxides, ethers, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, and ketones. The major constituents of eucalyptus oil are 1,8-cineole and Alpha-pinene.
1,8-cineole is a natural monoterpene, also known as eucalyptol, it is a major compound of many plant essential oils but is predominantly present in eucalyptus oil. As an isolated compound, 1,8-cineole is known for its mucolytic and spasmolytic action on the respiratory tract.
Alpha-pinene (sometimes referred to just as pinene or written α-pinene) is an organic compound of the terpene class, one of two isomers of pinene. Alpha-pinene brings a turpentine odour, which may remind you of a fresh forest aroma.
What is 1,8-cineole?
1,8 – Cineole is a monoterpene ether that is the primary chemical constituent of eucalyptus oil. It is also found in Melaleuca, Basil, Rosemary, Sage, and Peppermint essential oils. Often referred to as eucalyptol, 1,8-cineole has a camphor-like aroma and a pleasant spicy taste.
What does eucalyptus oil smell like?
The primary constituents of eucalyptus oil include terpenes, such as cineol, pinene and limonene. But it also contains up to 250 other phytochemical compounds in varying concentrations, depending on the breed of the eucalyptus tree. These aromatic compounds give eucalyptus oil a minty, camphorous scent that is sharp and highly pungent. Alpha-pinene also brings a hearty aroma, with some fresh forest hints.
What is the difference between a pure & natural essential oil and its synthetic counterpart?
Pure essential oils are 100% true to the plant from which they are sourced. They are pure plant extract: essential oils are usually obtained through distillation (via steam) of aromatic non-fatty parts of a plant or tree such as blossoms, leaves, roots, bark, resins, etc. To obtain a small bottle of pure essential oil, time, knowledge, and experience are necessary, but a huge amount of raw material is also mandatory. Advantages of 100% pure essential oil are: longer-lasting in the air, dissipates naturally, natural, aromatherapy benefits, proven to influence decision making, etc.
The fragrant oil, sometimes known as natural equivalent, is made by blending synthetic chemical compounds in a laboratory to duplicate the plant scent. It can contain known carcinogens, has no aromatherapy benefit, does not influence emotional decision making, can produce harmful respiratory issues and allergic reactions. Labelling laws enable producers to not label all ingredients, so you can never be exactly sure what the synthetic oil contains. Most of the time, it contains 95% of petroleum jelly, a by-product of petroleum production.
How should I store my eucalyptus oil?
To prevent oxidation, not only eucalyptus oil but most of the essential oils need to be stored in a cool place, away from heat and light. The saying that "nothing lasts forever." is partially true for essential oils. Putting essential oils in the fridge is a good idea but is unnecessary, as long as you can protect the essential oils from direct light and high temperatures.
Is eucalyptus oil safe to use around pets and animals?
We do not recommend using eucalyptus oil around animals and pets as they metabolize essential oils differently than humans. If you wish to use our eucalyptus oil on or around animals, we do recommend seeking professional instructions and advice from a veterinarian who is qualified in animal aromatherapy.
